01 / METHOD
How to use this calculator
- Use shrinkage results from a representative conditioned test sample.
- Enter the required dimensions after shrinkage.
- Enter lengthwise and widthwise shrinkage separately.
- Use the calculated pre-shrink dimensions before applying seam or hem allowances.
02 / APPLICATION
Useful for
- Washable home textiles
- Cut-size planning after relaxation tests
- Estimating dimensional compensation
03 / BOUNDARIES
Assumptions and limitations
What the estimate assumes
- Shrinkage percentages describe loss relative to the original pre-shrink dimension.
- Shrinkage is uniform and repeatable.
What it does not model
- Production lots, finishes, laundering, pressing, and relaxation can change shrinkage.
- Negative growth, skew, bow, and local distortion are not modeled.
04 / NOTES
Frequently asked questions
Why not just add 4% for 4% shrinkage?
Adding 4% is slightly short because shrinkage is taken from the larger original dimension. The inverse formula is target ÷ 0.96.
Should seam allowance be added before or after?
Calculate the shrinkage-adjusted body dimensions, then apply construction allowances according to your process.
